Club Wines for the
month of
J
ULY 2010

Summertime is here, and with it, grilling season. Our wines this month were chosen with grilled
meat and seafood in mind.

The winemaker for Cambiata Winery, Eric Laumann, states an ulterior motive in his production
method for his Albarino. “We don’t cook or eat like we did 20 years ago. Since we are pumping up
the flavor of our food, making fusions of fusion cooking, employing ingredients from around the
world, we need new wines that hold up their end of the food and wine tango.” This was our
thinking in choosing these two wines for you this month.

Let’s get grilling and start the dance!

CAMBIATA 2008 ALBARINO

This wonderful, limited production albarino is estate grown, produced and bottled in Monterey,
California. There are very few growers of this varietal outside of northwestern Spain. So to find
such a highly rated, domestically produced example is exceptional.

This wine is pleasantly floral, reminiscent of ripe peaches, pears and nectarines. The wine is dry
and crisp, but with enough body to be substantial and rich in the mouth. The floral qualities bring a
cool sweetness to the wine so it will match well with hot and spicy food. The crispness is right for
most fresh fish and the rich viscosity lends itself well to bold seafood like grilled lobster or shellfish.

LA POSTA COCINA 2008

This month’s red wine selection may well be the best value we’ve seen this year. With a deep
purple-colored, it offers notes of cedar, spice box, pencil lead, blueberry, blackberry, currants, and
black cherry. On the palate it is very well balanced, silky smooth, and a hint of cinnamon and gamy
notes emerge to accompany the sweet fruit.

This wine is a blend of 60% Malbec, 20% Syrah and 20% Bonarda (generally a light, fruity grape
that will make the wine easy-drinking). This Cocina blend was aged for twelve months in new
French (20%) and American oak, with no fining or filtration before bottling. The result is an
immediately drinkable wine—great with just about anything off the grill.
